A wolf for days had sought in vain
A satisfying meal.
No longer could he get a taste
Of either lamb or veal.
The sheep and calves, on his approach,
Would swiftly take to heel.

To try to fashion some device
Against their foe the cat.

Until the beast prepared a feast
Of tempting food and drink,
And, laughing at a secret jest,
Asked stork to be his dinner guest.
Upon a hunting spree.
And in their bag they caught a stag
Quite large enough for three.
