Pneumonia 肺炎

Incidence and prevalence of Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a respiratory disorder that affects the lungs (Dela & Wunderlink, 2017). It causes difficulty in breathing since the alveoli are filled with pus that limits oxygen intake. Pneumonia has caused more deaths worldwide according to the world health organization report. It accounts for approximately 16% of children’s deaths below five years. People aged 65 years or older are also at a higher risk of contracting the disease and can easily die when attacked. Statistics indicate that pneumonia affects 5.6 million people annually in the United States. Most of the affected individuals succumb to the condition without them knowing. Therefore, there is the need to evaluate the causes, signs and symptoms, prevention, and treatment of the disorder in a bid to manage the condition.

Pneumonia is caused by infectious agents such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses (Marrie & Future Medicine Ltd, 2016). Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of bacterial pneumonia in the young ones followed by Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib). The common viral cause of pneumonia is referred to as the respiratory syncytial virus. The disease can be transmitted through air-borne droplets.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) / Reading and Sharing

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is an infection that begins outside the hospital or is diagnosed within 48 hours after admission to the hospital in a person who has not resided in a long-term care facility for 14 days or more before admission (Grossman, & Porth, 2014). As according to Ferri (2017), the incidence of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is 1 in 100 persons. CAP is the most common infectious cause of death in the U.S. (p. 983).

The most common cause of infection is S. pneumoniae. Other common pathogens include H. influenza, S. aureus, and gram-negative bacilli. Less common agents are Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Legionella, Chlamydia species, and viruses, sometimes called atypical agents. Common viral causes of CAP include the influenza virus, RSV, adenovirus, and parainfluenza virus (Grossman, & Porth, 2014).
