Mobile Health (mHealth) Application (Reading & Sharing)

What is mHealth?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Group defined mHealth as “the use of mobile wireless communication devices to improve health outcomes, health care services, and health research”. It is a recent term used to encompass the use of mobile devices, such as mobile phones, patient-monitoring devices, PDAs, and other wireless devices, to support medical and public health practice.

mHEalth applications, include the use of mobile devices in collecting community and clinical health data, delivery of healthcare information to practitioners, researchers, and patients; real-time monitoring of patient vital signs; and direct provision of care (via mobile telemedicine). It can enhance diagnosis, help prevent diseases, improve treatments, improve accessibility to health care, and advance health-related research.

Some Roles of Informatics Nurse (reading notes make simple)

  1. Product Developer
    • is responsible for translating user requirements into effective informatics solutions.
    • A developer employed by a personal health record software vendor creates user-friendly screens for consumers to enter information as well as screens for nurses to display and interpret the data
    • A database administrator with a large multisite teaching organization manages an expanded nursing  vocabulary set for inpatient, ambulatory, and home health nursing documentation
    • A nurse web content developer for a consortium creates and validates content for educational handouts, help and tool tips for user interfaces that display national guidelines, and educational tool. this content includes new and innovative tools for knowledge dissemination
    • A programmer in a hospital IT department codes software for documenting diabetic education
    • an INS in the product developer role participates in the design, production, and marketing of new informatics solutions.
    • an understanding of business and nursing is essential in this role
    • Must be knowledge about: HL7, ISO, CPT, ICD, DICOM
  2. Project Manager:
    • responsible for planning and implementing of an informatics project
    • the INS uses communication, change management, process analysis, risk assessment, scope definition, and team building
    • this role acts as the liaison between clinicians, management, IS, vendors, and all other interested parties
    • Analyzing the information needs of the organization
      • sort through the large amounts of data collected to determine the best information for the organization
    • Helping the organization choose computer systems
      • assist in the system requirements, both for now and in the near future
    • Customizing purchased computer systems
      • work with IT to customize the system so that it will be the most useful
    • Designing computer information systems
      • assist IT in the overall design of the system
    • Testing new or upgraded computer systems
      • conduct robust tests of the system when changes or upgrades are performed
  3. Consultant
    • Consulting with individuals and groups in defining health care information problems and identifying methods for implementing, utilizing, and modifying IT solutions and data structures to support healthcare access, delivery, and evaluation.
    • Consulting as the project manager to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT), to ensure that team members are performing duties as assigned; and to complete the project on time and within budget.
    • Consulting with clients in writing requests for proposals to elicit vendor bids for informatics solutions and in evaluating vendor responses.
    • Consultant provides expert advice, opinions, and recommendations based on his or her area of expertise
    • flexibility, good communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and extensive clinical and informatics knowledge are highly desirable skill sets needed by the NI consultant
  4. ResearcherDeveloping informatics theories:
    • assemble what sort of information should be captured on the system and how the data should be analyzed
    • Researcher role entails conducting research (especially data mining) to create new informatics and clinical knowledge.
    • research may range from basic informatics research to developing clinical decision support tools for nurses
  5. Decision Support/ Outcomes Manager

    • set up training and education programs to encourage the most effective use of the system -the INS who chooses the educator role develops and implements educational materials and education sessions and provides education about the system to new or current employees during a system implementation or an upgrade
    • the success or failure of an informatics solution can be directly related to the education and training that were provided for end users.

Nursing Informatics Terminology Self Study- End user testing & Software sunsetting

Sunsetting: refer to something out or terminating it. The term is often used in computer hardware and software products as part of the business plan. Computer software vendors usually sunset an older version when new version is available, therefore, old version will be no longer supported by the company, thus new upgrade or replacement will be necessary, and software vendors receive profits. Sunsetting usually occurs after 2 or 3 upgrades so that organizations that have chosen to delay upgrading may be faced with potential failure of its computer system. Hardware may also be sunsetted, usually after a few years.
