A fox once fell into a well
And could not scramble out.
Then came a goat, and stared at him
In puzzlement and doubt.
” I’m here, dear Goat,” he said, “because
There soon will be a drought.

A fox once fell into a well

When first a roving fox observed
The lion saunter past,
He trembled like a thing unnerved,
Swung round, and vanished fast.
“Good news! Good news!” a fox exclaimed
To a rooster in a tree.
“There’s a new law! The King has said
No beast may strike another dead.
So, Friend, rejoice! Lift high your head
And come and dance with me!”
A thirsty fox beheld some grapes
That dangled from a vine.
“How good!” said he. “They’re just for me!
They look superbly fine!”
Smelling a box containing meat,
A fox could just creep in
And ravenously eat and eat
Until no longer thin.
