So aped a piglet’s squeal
His fears were lauded everywhere,
For men believed them real.
But he alone had made the sound;
There was no little pig around.

So aped a piglet’s squeal
His fears were lauded everywhere,
For men believed them real.
But he alone had made the sound;
There was no little pig around.

A deer was sick, and made her bed
Amid the meadow grass.
Then all around her thronged her friends –
The ox, the goat, the ass,
The sheep, the boar and many more –
A dense, imposing mass.
Ended a housewife’s snores;
She roused her maids and called them
Back to heir daily chores.

A farmer, dying, told his sons,
“You’ll have no need to rove.
Beneath my field you’ll find a yield
Far more than treasure-trove.”

“Good news! Good news!” a fox exclaimed
To a rooster in a tree.
“There’s a new law! The King has said
No beast may strike another dead.
So, Friend, rejoice! Lift high your head
And come and dance with me!”
