The Wagon Driver and Hercules – AESOP’S FABLES (the gods help those who help themselves)

Advertisements

Fables by Aesop (1989-07-03)

A wagon driver cursed his luck

With tears of rage and pain

To see his wagon tightly stuck

Upon a muddy lane.

“O Hercules! O Hercules!”

He called a strong old god.

“Come to my aid! Release me, please,

With your almighty rod!”

And Hercules, out of the sky,

Came down at this appeal.

“O Man,” he roared, “why not apply

Your shoulder to the wheel?

“By heave and jerk and push and shove

You’ll get the wagon through!

You should not crave from powers above

What your own arms can do.”
