Until the beast prepared a feast
Of tempting food and drink,
And, laughing at a secret jest,
Asked stork to be his dinner guest.
All in a wide, flat, shallow plate
He served the soup and wine.
The stork’s long bill was fitted ill
From such a dish to dine,
So home in grumbling discontent,
Enraged and supperless he went.
Then to his house, he brought the fox,
And offered cheese and meat
Deep in a flask – so great a task
That Reynard could not eat.
